Kyber crystal

Reading time: 5 min

Profile

Kyber crystals are Force-sensitive crystals at the heart of every lightsaber and at the core of every Death Star superweapon. They are the bridge between the spiritual and the mechanical in the galaxy.

Origin

The oldest kyber crystals grow deep inside ice and cave worlds such as Ilum, Jedha, Christophsis and Dantooine. The Jedi collected them in the Gathering, a rite of passage for Initiates.

Lightsabers

In a lightsaber, the bond between wielder and crystal produces the blade color:

  • Blue — Jedi Guardians (Anakin, Obi-Wan)
  • Green — Jedi Consulars (Yoda, Qui-Gon, Luke)
  • Yellow — Temple Sentinels (e.g. Rey)
  • Purple — Mace Windu (extremely rare)
  • White — a “purified” crystal (Ahsoka Tano)
  • Red — a “bled” crystal corrupted by dark energy

Death Star and Empire

The Empire realized that a sufficiently large focused kyber crystal could power a superlaser capable of destroying entire planets. This is why Ilum and Jedha were stripped bare.

Spiritual echo

Kyber crystals “remember” their wielders. A red crystal can be purified — as Ahsoka did — and shine again.

Why it matters

Whoever controls kyber controls both the Jedi tradition and the most destructive weapon in the galaxy. Kyber is the physical heart of both sides of the saga.
