Kessel is a rocky planet in the Outer Rim, famous for its Spice Mines and the notorious Kessel Run. The planet is a crucible of crime.

Kessel is an inhospitable planet with extreme temperatures and toxic atmospheres. The surface is covered with rock formations and underground mines. The notorious Spice Mines extend for kilometers beneath the surface.

The Kessel Run

The Kessel Run is a feared hyperspace shortcut through the Akkerriff Nebula. Navigators had to get extremely close to gravitonic disturbances. Han Solo held the record with 12 parsecs – a measure of distance, not time.

History

Kessel was the site of the escape of Leia Organa and her companions from an Imperial prison. The Spice Mines were worked by memorable creatures like the Wookiee Chewbacca.
