Holocron

Reading time: 5 min

Profile

A holocron is a Force-powered data storage device shaped like a cube or polyhedron. Jedi and Sith use them to preserve knowledge, history, and Force teachings across millennia — only Force-sensitives can open them.

Construction

Inside a holocron sit kyber crystals and fine data crystals. A holographic AI — the “Gatekeeper consciousness” — guides the user through the knowledge.

Jedi Holocrons (Cube-Shaped)

Jedi holocrons are blue-gold cubes with eight edges. They contain Force lessons, stories of ancient Jedi, star charts, and exercises for Padawans. Thousands were stored in the Jedi Archives on Coruscant.

Sith Holocrons (Pyramid-Shaped)

Sith holocrons are red pyramids. They contain dark rituals, forbidden knowledge, and dangerous invocations. They often only open under pain and anger — a built-in filter.

Known Holocrons

  • Bail Organa’s Holocron — In “Rebels,” Ezra, Kanan, and Hera search for a holocron of Sith secrets.
  • Darth Sidious’ Holocron — In Episode IX as a clue to Exegol.
  • Jedi Archives — Thousands of holocrons were lost with the Jedi Temple.

Cultural Significance

Holocrons are the mythical library of the Star Wars universe — the only reliable link between the different ages of Jedi and Sith knowledge. They appear again and again as quest objects in comics, games, and series.
