Darksaber
Profile
The Darksaber is the only black lightsaber in Star Wars canon — a flat, blade-shaped weapon forged by Tarre Vizsla, the first Mandalorian Jedi. It has been the symbol of Mandalorian rule for over 1,000 years.
Origin
Tarre Vizsla, the only Mandalorian ever to become a Jedi Knight, created the Darksaber. After his death House Vizsla took the blade — and saw it as the birthright of Mandalorian leadership.
Tradition
Whoever wins the Darksaber in open combat is the rightful ruler of Mandalore. Whoever receives it as a gift, without fighting, weakens their own claim — a recurring conflict in “The Mandalorian.”
Known Wielders
- Tarre Vizsla — First wielder.
- Pre Vizsla (Death Watch) — In “The Clone Wars” he lost the blade to Maul.
- Maul — In “The Clone Wars” and “Rebels”; took it from Pre Vizsla in combat.
- Sabine Wren — Handed the blade to Bo-Katan in “Rebels.”
- Bo-Katan Kryze — Received it as a gift, sparking the conflict over the legitimacy of her rule.
- Moff Gideon — Won it during the “Great Purge.”
- Din Djarin — Won it from Moff Gideon in “The Mandalorian” Season 2.
Properties
The blade is flatter and shorter than a classic lightsaber. It reacts to its wielder’s state of mind — doubt makes it heavier. Bo-Katan describes this in the “Mandalorian” finale.
Cultural Significance
The Darksaber is the most important lightsaber expansion since the original films. It brought Mandalorian mythology into the lightsaber universe and gave modern Star Wars an iconic new weapon.
