Star Wars for Beginners

Want to start with Star Wars but feel overwhelmed by the scale? This guide walks you through the essentials in about an hour of reading — no spoilers, no fan-war debates.

The minimum: three films

1

Episode IV – A New Hope

The 1977 original — where everything starts.

2

Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back

The most important story twist in the entire saga.

3

Episode VI – Return of the Jedi

Closes the original trilogy.

After those, you decide: prequels (I–III), sequels (VII–IX), or jump into series. The full Star Wars viewing order and the galactic timeline compares every route side by side.

Terms you should know

Canon vs. Legends

Disney-greenlit material is canon; pre-2014 novels, comics, games are Legends.

Mandalorian

A warrior culture from Mandalore — Beskar armor, helmet code, complicated politics.

Three series that work without prior knowledge

The Mandalorian

A western inside Star Wars. Strong onboarding for series fans.

Andor

An adult political spy drama. Works standalone, no prior viewing required.

Beginner FAQ

Do I have to start with Episode I?

No. Most fans recommend starting with Episode IV (1977). The prequels (I–III) play better once you already know the original trilogy.

How long does "everything" take?

The nine main films together are roughly 22 hours. With every series included, total runtime reaches the middle three-digit hours.

Where is Star Wars set?

In a fictional galaxy far, far away. Key planets include Tatooine, Coruscant, Naboo, Endor, Hoth and Mandalore.

Canon vs. Legends — what is the difference?

Since 2014 only Disney-greenlit Star Wars stories are official canon. Older novels, comics and games run under "Legends" and are not part of the new continuity.

Where should families with kids start?

Episode IV, then Episode V, then Rebels (animated). Skip Revenge of the Sith and Andor for younger viewers — both are darker in tone.
