Lightsaber colors and what they mean

Blue, green, purple, yellow, red, white, and the black Darksaber – every color tells a story about orders, Force alignment, and wielders. This guide maps every blade against current Star Wars canon.

Blue

Guardians and front-line Jedi

The most common Jedi blade. Blue traditionally belongs to the Guardian discipline – Jedi who fight and protect on the front lines.

Known wielders

  • Anakin Skywalker (before his fall)
  • Obi-Wan Kenobi (early eras)
  • Luke Skywalker (Episodes IV–V)
  • Rey (returned to Tatooine)

In the sequel canon, blue is the default for inherited or rediscovered blades.

Green

Consulars and seasoned Jedi

Green stands for wisdom, diplomacy, and a deeper bond with the Force. It is associated with Jedi Consulars and senior masters.

Known wielders

  • Yoda
  • Qui-Gon Jinn
  • Luke Skywalker (Episode VI)
  • Ahsoka Tano (early blades)

Often assigned to characters who are calmer in combat but dominant in the Force.

Purple

The Mace Windu outlier

Purple is extremely rare in canon. The color exists because Samuel L. Jackson asked for it and Lucas agreed. Fan lore frames it as a balance between light and dark.

Known wielders

  • Mace Windu
  • Mara Jade (Legends)

Only Mace Windu carries it in current Disney canon.

Yellow

Sentinels and Temple Guards

Yellow belongs to the Jedi Sentinels – scouts, investigators, and Temple Guards. Rey ends Episode IX with a yellow blade.

Known wielders

  • Jedi Temple Guards
  • Asajj Ventress (yellow blade in comics)
  • Rey (Episode IX, custom hilt)

Rey’s yellow blade signals a path beyond classic Jedi tradition.

White

Purified crystals reclaimed from the dark side

White blades appear when a bled Sith crystal is purified by a light-side user. They represent independence from both orders.

Known wielders

  • Ahsoka Tano (after leaving the Jedi Order)

Ahsoka purified the kyber crystals of an Inquisitor – canonized in the novel Ahsoka.

Red

Sith and dark-side users

Red blades come from bleeding a kyber crystal. The wielder pours hate, anger, and pain into the crystal, corrupting its color.

Known wielders

  • Darth Sidious / Palpatine
  • Darth Vader
  • Darth Maul
  • Count Dooku
  • Kylo Ren
  • Inquisitors

Inquisitor blades rotate – a signature Imperial design.

Darksaber (Black)

Mandalorian symbol of rule

The Darksaber is the only known black blade in canon. Forged by Tarre Vizsla, the first Mandalorian Jedi. Whoever wins it in combat is recognized as Mandalore’s rightful leader.

Known wielders

  • Tarre Vizsla
  • Pre Vizsla
  • Maul
  • Sabine Wren
  • Bo-Katan Kryze
  • Din Djarin

Flat, curved, with a unique sonic signature. Central to The Mandalorian.

Bronze / Orange

Rare picks in games and comics

Bronze and orange blades appear in Star Wars Jedi: Survivor and various comics. They typically belong to veterans or characters off the standard path.

Known wielders

  • Cal Kestis (Jedi: Survivor – unlockable)
  • Several comic-only characters

Not yet established in the film canon – but canonical through games and comics.

Background

How do the colors form?

Where do the colors come from?

Every blade contains a kyber crystal from Ilum (later Starkiller Base). Kyber crystals are Force-sensitive and "choose" their wielder. The color forms from the bond between user and crystal – never from paint or coatings.

Why are Sith blades always red?

Sith steal crystals and dominate them with rage, pain, and the dark side. The process is called bleeding and turns the crystal blood red. Purified red crystals turn white – Ahsoka is the canonical example.

What about double and crossguard blades?

Double blades (Maul, Pong Krell), curved hilts (Dooku), Inquisitor whip variants, and crossguards (Kylo Ren) are construction styles. They never change the color meaning but signal a wielder’s school and stance.

Lightsaber color FAQ

Which lightsaber color is the rarest?

In film canon, purple is the rarest – Mace Windu is the only known wielder. The Darksaber is also unique but classes as its own blade type rather than a color variant.

What does a white lightsaber mean?

White blades appear when a red Sith crystal is purified by a light-side user. They signal independence from both Jedi and Sith. Ahsoka Tano is the best-known example.

Why does Kylo Ren have a crossguard saber?

Kylo’s crystal is cracked and unstable. The side vents act as pressure releases for the excess energy. The design intentionally mirrors medieval claymore swords.

Can Jedi wield red lightsabers?

Not in current canon. Red comes from bleeding a crystal with the dark side. When purified by a Jedi the crystal turns white or clear – never back to blue or green.

Which color should a new Star Wars fan know first?

Blue, green, and red are the three core colors in any saga discussion. Purple (Mace Windu), yellow (Sentinels and Rey), and the black Darksaber are the next steps for deeper lore.
