Definition

The Rule of Two is a Sith doctrine from Darth Bane: only one master and one apprentice at a time — ‘one to embody the power, one to crave it’.

Effect

It prevents Sith self-destruction by internal infighting and turns the Sith into a covert operation rather than a public order.

Relevance to the saga

Palpatine + Maul, Palpatine + Dooku, Palpatine + Vader — always two. Rey + Kylo briefly break this rule.
