Protocol droid
Definition
Protocol droids are humanoid droids specialized in language, etiquette and diplomatic procedure. Manufactured most famously by Cybot Galactica (the 3PO line), they are fluent in millions of forms of communication and trained in galactic customs.
Context
C-3PO is the protocol droid every fan knows: Tatooine homestead, Cloud City reassembly, Endor celebration. Other protocol droids appear across the saga — TC-14 on the Trade Federation ship in The Phantom Menace, the Imperial translators in Andor, and 4-LOM as a bounty-hunter variation.
Why it matters
Protocol droids translate politics, fear and culture into something the audience can follow. C-3PO often voices the stakes of a scene — odds, risks, etiquette — and that exposition is part of how the films stay readable for new viewers and younger fans.
