Midi-chlorians are microscopic, intelligent life forms that reside within the cells of all living things, serving as the biological link to the cosmic Force.

Significance

Without them, life could not exist, and no one would have knowledge of the Force. A higher midi-chlorian count in an individual’s blood correlates directly to a stronger potential connection to the Force. Anakin Skywalker possessed the highest count ever recorded (over 20,000). During the Republic era, Jedi routinely used blood tests to identify Force-sensitive children. Following the Empire’s fall, Sith cultists and Imperial scientists (such as Doctor Pershing) conducted experiments with midi-chlorians in attempts to artificially engineer Force abilities in clones.
