Definition

Midi-chlorians are microscopic, intelligent organisms living in the cells of every living being. The higher the concentration, the stronger the Force sensitivity.

Anakin’s count

Qui-Gon Jinn measures Anakin Skywalker at over 20,000 midi-chlorians per cell — higher than Yoda. This is the trigger for calling him “the Chosen One”.

Controversy

Many fans hate the concept because it reduces the mystical Force to a blood test. The Mandalorian keeps it canon anyway (the M-count tests on Grogu).

Why they matter

Midi-chlorians are the biological explanation for Force sensitivity — and therefore the foundation for Grogu’s value, the clone programme, and Palpatine’s genetic creation of Rey’s father.
