Jedi Trials
Reading time: 5 min
Definition
The Jedi Trials are the five ritual tests by which a Padawan is promoted to Jedi Knight:
- Trial of Skill — lightsaber proficiency
- Trial of Courage — facing fear
- Trial of Flesh — surviving pain and injury
- Trial of the Spirit — clarity under pressure
- Trial of the Self — recognising one’s own weaknesses
Clone Wars practice
During the Clone Wars many trials become on-the-job. Anakin is knighted without formal trials — a break with tradition the Council later regrets.
Promotion to Master
If you train a Padawan to Knight and the Council recognises it, you are promoted to Jedi Master. Only then is a Council seat possible.
Why they matter
The trials are the maturity architecture of the Jedi Order. When they collapse, eventually the Jedi collapse too — an implicit subtext of the prequels.
