IG-11
Definition
IG-11 is an IG-series assassin droid retired from bounty hunting and reprogrammed by the Ugnaught Kuiil into a nurse and protector. He becomes one of the most important supporting characters of The Mandalorian Season 1.
Context
IG-11 first appears alongside Din Djarin during the bounty contract for the Child (Grogu). After being deactivated, Kuiil rebuilds him with a strict no-violence-against-the-child directive. IG-11 returns to defend Mando, Cara Dune and Grogu on Nevarro, and ends the season by self-destructing to save the group. He is rebuilt as a mostly inert ally in The Book of Boba Fett arc.
Why it matters
IG-11 reframes the bounty-hunter droid from a faceless threat (IG-88 in The Empire Strikes Back) into a moral character. His arc parallels Mando’s: a contract killer choosing to protect a child. He is also the cleanest demonstration that, in canon, droids can be reprogrammed enough to break their original purpose.
