Hoth
Overview
Hoth is a remote ice and tundra planet in the Outer Rim. Through Echo Base and the Battle of Hoth in The Empire Strikes Back, it becomes the saga’s shorthand for a resilient Rebellion under brutal Imperial pressure.
Geography
Permafrost plains, ice caves and wampa territory dominate the surface. Blizzards and extreme cold turn Hoth into a natural hideout, but also a lethal habitat without specialized gear such as tauntauns and insulated suits.
Echo Base and the battle
After losing Yavin 4, the Rebellion retreats to Echo Base. The Empire detects them through a probe droid, and the Battle of Hoth — with AT-AT walkers, snowtroopers and a planetary shield — becomes one of the most important military turning points of the saga.
Significance
Hoth stands for “the Rebellion survives, but it pays for every victory”. The planet is also where Luke first sees a vision of Yoda, marking his shift from warrior to Jedi apprentice.
In other media
Hoth keeps showing up in games, novels and crossover events as the iconic Star Wars snow battlefield, and remains one of the most recognizable locations of the Original Trilogy.
