Gungans

Definition

The Gungans are an amphibious species from the planet Naboo. They live in underwater cities like Otoh Gunga and maintain their own military and political culture.

Role in Episode I

In The Phantom Menace, Jar Jar Binks helps unite the human population of Naboo with the Gungans. The Grand Army of the Gungans ties down the droid army while Padmé Amidala retakes Theed.

Technology

Gungans use organic-looking shields, blaster-resistant energy spheres and large underwater vehicles. Their tech intentionally contrasts with Naboo’s polished surface aesthetic.

Why it matters

The Gungans explain the political core of Episode I: Naboo only survives because separate societies finally cooperate.
