Great Purge of Mandalore
Definition
The Great Purge of Mandalore is the Imperial assault that devastates Mandalore, kills or displaces much of its population and hardens the Mandalorian diaspora.
What happened
The Empire bombards Mandalore and plunders beskar. Many survivors scatter into hidden enclaves while Imperial remnants continue to profit from stolen metal.
Moff Gideon’s role
Moff Gideon is tied to the Darksaber, Imperial control and exploitation of Mandalorian resources. His role turns him into a symbol of the Empire using Mandalore’s own culture against Mandalorians.
Consequences
The purge creates distrust between clans, strengthens the myth of a poisoned homeworld and makes the return to Mandalore both a political and spiritual goal.
Why it matters
Without the Great Purge, The Mandalorian is mostly a bounty-hunter story. With it, Din Djarin’s journey becomes part of a larger question: can a culture rebuild home after destruction?
