Grey Jedi
Definition
Grey Jedi is mostly a fan term for Force users who follow neither the strict Jedi Order nor the Sith. In official canon it is rarely used and not established as a full order.
Why fans use it
Many characters feel “grey” because they break rules, distrust institutions or operate outside the Jedi Council. Qui-Gon Jinn, Ahsoka Tano and Kanan Jarrus are common examples.
Canon framing
Important: independence does not automatically mean balance between light and dark. Canon usually presents the dark side as corrupting, even when characters are critical of the Jedi.
Better wording
The cleaner phrase is often independent Force user: someone who uses the Force but serves no formal Force organisation.
Fan relevance
The term remains popular because it captures a real Star Wars wish: the galaxy should not be only Jedi versus Sith, but also people trying to find their own way between dogma and temptation.
