Duel of the Fates

Definition

Duel of the Fates is the choral cue for the fight with Darth Maul in The Phantom Menace. It frames the duel as a decision about Anakin’s future.

Meaning

The scene is not only a lightsaber fight. When Qui-Gon falls, Anakin loses the mentor who might have guided him differently.

Why it matters

The cue shows how the prequels build tragedy: spectacular action with an irreversible turning point underneath.
