Carbon Freezing

Definition

Carbon freezing preserves living beings inside a block of carbonite. In The Empire Strikes Back, Darth Vader tests the process on Han Solo before using the same trap for Luke Skywalker.

Meaning

The scene turns Bespin from elegant refuge into Imperial trap. Han becomes cargo for Boba Fett, Leia loses an ally and Vader shows how strategy and torture overlap.

Why it matters

The carbonite block is one of Star Wars’ strongest images: romance, betrayal, bounty hunting and Sith violence all become visible in a single object.
