Astromech droid
Definition
Astromech droids are utility droids built to support starships and starfighters. They handle navigation calculations, in-flight repairs, data storage and engineering tasks that pilots cannot reach during a fight.
Context
The most iconic astromechs in canon are R2-D2, BB-8 and the Ghost crew’s Chopper. They appear from the Prequels through the Sequel era and are a constant in Rebel, Republic and Resistance hangars. The class spans many models — the R-series, BB-series and older units like the cargo astromechs on Mon Cala.
Why it matters
Astromechs let the saga keep its dogfights and hyperspace jumps grounded: someone calculates the route, plugs the leak and brings the X-wing home. They also carry plot-critical data — Leia’s plans inside R2-D2 and the Resistance map fragment inside BB-8 are the clearest examples.
