V-Wing Starfighter
Overview
The V-Wing Starfighter, officially designated as the Alpha-3 N-1, was a light attack fighter of the Galactic Republic, flown by clone pilots of the Republic Navy during the Clone Wars. Its characteristic V-shaped wing design gave it the nickname “V-Wing”.
Technical Specifications
- Length: 6 meters
- Armament: 2 Fixed-frequency Laser Cannons
- Shields: Light Deflector Shield
- Crew: 1 Pilot (Clone Trooper)
- Speed: 1,100 km/h (Atmosphere)
- Propulsion: Twin Ion Engine (modified)
- Hyperdrive: No (short range)
Design
The V-Wing was developed by the Naboo Juggernaut and showed clear design elements of Naboo aesthetics combined with military functionality. The characteristic V-wings were designed for maximum speed and maneuverability.
Armament and Equipment
Despite its small size, the V-Wing was an effective interceptor:
- 2 Fixed-frequency Laser Cannons
- Light Deflector Shields
- Onboard Weapon System Integrated
- Short Range (no hyperdrive)
Deployment in the Clone Wars
The V-Wing was deployed as an escort fighter for larger Republic ships such as the Acclamator-class. Since it had no hyperdrive, it had to be brought to the operation area by mother ships or troop transports.
Notable Squadrons
- Blue Squadron: One of the most famous V-Wing squadrons
- Z-95 Headhunter: Successor with hyperdrive
- Arc-170: Heavy escort fighter
Successor
The V-Wing was later replaced by the Z-95 Headhunter, which had a hyperdrive and was therefore more versatile. The Z-95 in turn became the basis for the X-Wing of the Rebellion.
