R2-D2 (Artoo) is an astromech droid who sits at the center of almost every important moment of the saga — from the Clone Wars to the liberation of the galaxy.

History

R2-D2 was originally a Naboo royal astromech who became Anakin Skywalker’s wingman during the Clone Wars. After the fall of the Republic and Anakin’s turn to Darth Vader, Artoo passed through several hands before ending up with Princess Leia Organa.

On Leia’s orders, Artoo carried the Death Star plans to Tatooine, where Luke Skywalker found him — and the saga began.

Partnership with C-3PO

R2-D2 and the protocol droid C-3PO form one of the strangest partnerships in the galaxy. Threepio panics, Artoo acts — and together they survive almost every major event of three trilogies.

Legacy

R2-D2 is one of the most beloved characters of the Star Wars saga. He is a living witness of the galaxy’s history — one of the very few characters present in every numbered film.
