Cortosis Ore
Overview
Cortosis ore is a rare and unusual mineral found throughout the Star Wars galaxy. Its most remarkable property is the ability to briefly short out or absorb a lightsaber blade — which made it one of the most sought-after materials for anti-Jedi weapons and armor.
Properties
Cortosis is a crystalline ore, characteristically black with a glossy sheen. It is typically mined from underground veins on a handful of worlds across the galaxy. The material is naturally attuned to the Force and reacts to lightsaber plasma.
On contact with a lightsaber, cortosis releases a brief electrical pulse that interrupts the blade. The effect lasts only seconds before the material is exhausted, but it is enough to give a non-Force user a decisive moment in a duel.
Applications
- Weapons — staffs, gauntlets and blades that can take a lightsaber strike without being cut
- Armor plating — used by elite anti-Jedi units during the Clone Wars
- Locks and vault doors — a sealed cortosis vault could not be cut open
- Battle droids — limited cortosis plating was tested on droid units that engaged Jedi
Notable users
- General Grievous — limited cortosis plating on his exoskeleton
- Anti-Jedi mercenaries during the Clone Wars
- Mandalorian smiths — rare cortosis weaves into beskar prototypes
Why it matters
Cortosis is the small but crucial reminder that a lightsaber is not invincible. In the right hand, an ordinary blade — or the right mineral — can change a duel.
