Overview

Kashyyyk is the home planet of the Wookiees, a hairy, powerful humanoid species known for exceptional strength and remarkable loyalty. The planet is famous for its giant, several-kilometer-high forest trees, in whose branches the Wookiees have built their residential cities and settlements. The close connection between the Wookiees and their natural environment makes Kashyyyk a unique ecosystem in the galaxy. The planet gained tragic fame when the Empire enslaved it and condemned the proud Wookiees to forced labor in Imperial mines. The liberation of Kashyyyk by the Rebel Alliance marked one of the most significant moments in the fight against the Empire and demonstrated the unbroken fighting spirit of the Wookiee people.

Geography

Kashyyyk is a planet with an exceptional biosphere dominated by giant trees that can reach several kilometers in height. These Wroshyr trees form a complex vertical ecosystem in which various species of flora and fauna thrive in astonishing diversity. The lower levels of the forest are covered with dense undergrowth and sambahorn-like shrubs, while the middle regions are populated by climbing species and the Wookiees’ dwellings. In the highest treetops, where one can gaze at the planetary ocean in the distance, the Wookiees have established their holiest sites and gathering places. The planet’s floor is a dark, humid jungle inhabited by dangerous predators such as the marauding Treps and the venomous Myrjams, making it impassable for most visitors. The atmosphere is warm and humid, with frequent rainfall that promotes the lush vegetation. In addition to the vast forest areas, there are also large swamp areas and open savannas traversed by various herd animals. The coastal regions are characterized by mangroves and other salt-tolerant plants and harbor a rich marine fauna. Climate change and Imperial activities have sustainably altered some regions of Kashyyyk, with many areas slowly returning to their original state.

History

The history of the Wookiees on Kashyyyk spans millennia, during which the species developed a deep spiritual connection to their forest world. The Wookiees lived for a long time in relative isolation from the rest of the galaxy, although they maintained contact with galactic traders and travelers at an early stage. Their exceptional strength and craftsmanship, particularly in wood processing and shipbuilding, made them valued trading partners. During the Clone Wars, the Wookiees allied with the Galactic Republic and provided Boggswords and other warriors for the republican forces. The Battle of Kashyyyk was one of the last and bloodiest fights of the Clone Wars, where Wookiee warriors fought alongside Clone troops against the droid forces of the Confederacy. After the end of the Clone Wars and the establishment of the Empire, Kashyyyk was enslaved. The Imperials began the massive exploitation of the planet’s mineral resources and forced the Wookiees to work in the mines and on Imperial construction sites. This dark era of oppression lasted almost twenty years, during which many Wookiees lost their lives or were separated from their families. Resistance against the Empire continued, however, and Wookiees like Chewbacca joined the Rebel Alliance. The liberation of Kashyyyk by the Rebels was a decisive moment in the fight against the Empire and became a symbol of resistance for all oppressed peoples. After the fall of the Empire, Kashyyyk slowly recovered from the devastation and the Wookiees began rebuilding their destroyed homeland.

Chewbacca – The most famous Wookiee in the galaxy, warrior and hero of the Rebellion, who experienced countless adventures at Han Solo’s side. Chewbacca is known for his unwavering loyalty and impressive physical strength.

Tarfful – The chief of the Shyriiwook tribes of Kashyyyk, who played a key role in the resistance against the Empire during the Battle of Kashyyyk.

Attichitcuk – The wise elder and grandfather of Chewbacca, who taught his grandson the wisdom and traditions of the Wookiees.

Lowbacca – A young Wookiee Jedi Padawan who played an important role during the Yuuzhan Vong invasion.

Kyp Durron – A human who developed a close connection to Kashyyyk and completed part of his training there.
