Ilum

Profile

Ilum is the holiest ice world of the Jedi. Deep beneath its frozen crust grow the kyber crystals, without which no lightsaber will sing.

The Gathering

Every Jedi Initiate went through the crystal caves of Ilum during the Gathering — a rite of passage in which they had to find their own kyber crystal alone in the ice. Yoda accompanied the final generations personally.

From temple to mine

After Order 66 the Empire discovered Ilum’s kyber reserves. Vast strip mines were carved into the planet to feed kyber to the Death Star superlaser. The old Jedi caves were largely destroyed.

Starkiller Base

The First Order went one step further and turned Ilum itself into Starkiller Base — a superweapon capable of destroying entire star systems. In Episode VII the Resistance destroys the planet and the weapon at the same time.

Why it matters

Ilum is the whole tragedy of the saga compressed into one world: the spiritual heart of the Jedi, hollowed out, weaponized, destroyed.
