Crait
Overview
Crait is a small, mineral-rich planet in the Outer Rim, distinguished by its unique red-and-white salt crust that creates a stunning visual illusion. The planet served as the Resistance’s secret retreat after the evacuation of D’Qar and was the site of one of the last desperate battles against the First Order. The planet’s rich mineral deposits, particularly the rare Craitonite, made it attractive for mining, but its remote location and treacherous conditions kept most settlers away. Today, Crait is a symbol of resistance and hope that even the darkest times can be overcome.
Geography
Crait’s surface is covered by a thick, several-meter-deep layer of salt that lies like a glittering red blanket over the planet. Beneath this salt crust are red-colored minerals that give the planet its characteristic appearance and make it one of the most photogenic locations in the galaxy. The mineral Craitonite, which gives the planet its name, is particularly valuable as it cannot be detected by most scanners and sensors. This characteristic made Crait an ideal hiding place for the Resistance, as the First Order could not locate the planet with their standard tracking equipment. The landscape is structured by vast plains, shallow hills, and the remnants of old mines dating back to the era when mining operations were conducted on Crait. The atmosphere is thin and stuffy, with a slight reddish tint that filters the light from nearby stars. Although the planet has no major bodies of water, there are underground springs that can be used by inhabitants. The extreme temperature fluctuations between day and night make the planet an additional challenge for potential settlers, as facilities must be protected against the burning heat of day and the icy cold at night.
History
Crait’s history dates back to the early days of the Galactic Republic, when explorers mapped the planet’s rich mineral deposits. The extensive mining operations conducted in the following era left a network of tunnels and mines that today serve as natural shelter. After the decline of mining, Crait was largely abandoned and was only known as a stopover for smugglers and travelers using hidden routes through the Outer Rim. During the era of the Empire, Crait was a minor outpost occasionally visited by Imperial patrols but played no strategic role. After the Battle of Endor and the fall of the Empire, the planet fell into a kind of obscurity until General Leia Organa, searching for a new base for the Resistance, rediscovered the planet. The remoteness, difficult tracking conditions, and natural shelters made Crait the perfect choice for the few remaining fighters in the rebellion against the First Order. The Resistance established their base in the old mines and survived there for several months before the First Order tracked down the planet. The subsequent Battle of Crait was one of the most dramatic confrontations of the Resistance War and ended with the triumphant escape through the use of old mining shuttles.
