Overview

Bespin is a gas giant in the Outer Rim whose Tibanna gas reserves made the floating Cloud City an industrial oasis above the clouds. Here Vader reveals the saga’s most famous family secret to Luke.

Geography

Endless pastel cloud bands, a highly functional orange-red atmosphere at habitable altitude, and deep below an aggressive storm system. Cloud City floats on repeatedly distributed anti-gravity repulsors.

Cloud City

Cloud City is a full city — casinos, hangars, residential districts, and Tibanna gas refineries. It was run by Baron-Administrator Lando Calrissian before the Empire turned it into a trap for Han Solo and Leia.

Episode V

In “The Empire Strikes Back” Luke duels Vader in Cloud City’s hangar canyons. “No — I am your father” is spoken here; Luke throws himself into the abyss and is rescued by the Falcon.

Tibanna Gas

Tibanna gas is used in blaster cylinders and hyperdrive systems; Bespin is the galaxy’s most important source. The Imperial seizure of Cloud City was a strike against Rebellion logistics.
